On Thursday, 28 February 2021, my YouTube Silver Play Button finally arrived. I was filming some videos in my home studio, and when I arrived at the shop there it was waiting for me: the all-black box that simply said “YouTube” on it.
Even though we officially passed 100,000 YouTube subscribers (youtube.com/ukelikethepros) on I January 2021 (although Alex claims I got the date wrong and that it was actually Jan. 7th), it took a while for YouTube to get this to me.
Actually, I had to harass them a little bit. It was only after several emails that they finally sent me the link to order my Silver Play Button. I guess they have to verify that you are worthy of this award.
Regardless, when it did arrive, I felt an enormous sense of pride and accomplishment upon seeing the box. I went excitedly to show Alex and Mari, and they immediately said “DO NOT OPEN IT.” Here I am, after waiting over 5 years since I started my YouTube channel, and I can’t open the award that is the culmination of all my hard work.
But Alex and Mari’s reasoning was sound. Alex wanted me to do an unboxing video for the Uke Like The Pros Nation, and they both wanted my honest reactions on camera.
So I’ve opened it now, and the questions is: What am I going to do with the award? Are there options? Turns out that other YouTube creators have done a variety of things with their Silver Play Button awards. I can’t claim I have seen any of these videos, but supposedly creators sell or auction off the award, and some have even filmed themselves destroying the award.
Destroying the award?
That seems odd. Why would you destroy an award that you worked hard to get? Are you trying to give the middle finger to YouTube? Or maybe just to create a video that gets lots of views. I’m not sure. I guess I’m old school, since I plan on hanging it in the Uke Like The Pros Headquarters at our warehouse.

Let’s enjoy this victory together and figure out how we get the Gold YouTube Play Button when we hit 1,000,000 subscribers. Is that possible? Of course, it is. I’m up for it if you are. LET’S GOOOO!!!!!!!!
