In the world of stringed instruments, few brands evoke as much admiration as Kala, a name synonymous with innovation and quality in the ukulele community. Among their celebrated line of instruments stands the Kala CTRG-B Trembesi Metropolitan Baritone Ukulele, a true testament to superior craftsmanship and sonic excellence. This baritone ukulele is a compelling choice for both serious musicians and avid collectors seeking an instrument that blends elegance, playability, and unparalleled tonal quality.
A Symphony of Premium Tonewoods
The heart of the Kala CTRG-B’s appeal lies in its construction. The solid cedar top, known for its warm resonance and excellent projection, serves as the foundation of its rich sound profile. Cedar’s innate ability to produce clear and articulate tones makes it a favorite among fingerstyle players, as it captures even the subtlest nuances of a performance.
Complementing the cedar top are solid trembesi back and sides. Sourced from Java, trembesi is a unique tonewood celebrated for its visually stunning figuring and tonal versatility. Its sound qualities lie somewhere between mahogany and koa, delivering a balanced response with exceptional sustain. Together, these woods create a harmonious blend of warmth, clarity, and depth, making this ukulele suitable for a wide range of musical styles.
Design That Inspires
The Kala CTRG-B is as visually striking as it is functional. The high-gloss polyester finish not only enhances the natural beauty of the cedar and trembesi but also provides a layer of protection against wear. The black ABS binding adds a sleek and modern touch, framing the body with subtle elegance.
One of the standout features of this model is its sloped cutaway design. This thoughtful addition allows players effortless access to the higher frets, enabling intricate solos and advanced chord voicings. The inclusion of a truss rod—a rarity in many ukuleles—provides the player with the ability to fine-tune the neck’s curvature for optimal comfort and playability.
Hardware and Playability
The ebony fingerboard and bridge offer a smooth and durable playing surface, ensuring the ukulele will stand the test of time. Ebony’s natural hardness also contributes to the instrument’s sustain and overall tonal brilliance. The Graph Tech NuBone® nut and saddle further enhance the instrument’s sustain and clarity, allowing each note to ring out with precision.
Outfitted with D’Addario® Pro-Arté Titanium strings, the CTRG-B delivers a bright yet balanced tone that’s both responsive and dynamic. These strings are known for their durability and ability to maintain tuning stability, ensuring that the instrument sounds its best at all times.
Dimensions Tailored for Comfort
The Kala CTRG-B boasts dimensions designed with the player in mind. Its scale length of 20.0625 inches and overall length of 29.875 inches provide ample room for comfortable fretting while maintaining a manageable size for portability. The body depth of 3.375 inches ensures a robust sound without feeling cumbersome, and the nut width of 1.5 inches accommodates a wide range of playing styles, from fingerpicking to strumming.
