“The Christmas Waltz” History:
🎯 Basic Info & Origins
- “The Christmas Waltz” is originally a Christmas standard written by Sammy Cahn (lyrics) and Jule Styne (music) in 1954.
- Their version appears on She & Him’s holiday album A Very She & Him Christmas — it is the opening track.
- The album was released on October 25, 2011 by Merge Records.
🎶 Style & Interpretation by She & Him
- Their take on “The Christmas Waltz” is described as gentle and wistful — with acoustic guitar and piano accompaniment, and vocals with a nostalgic, vintage-pop lean.
- The arrangement leans into their signature retro-pop / indie-folk sensibilities rather than a full orchestral production.
- One reviewer described it as a “whispering promise of Christmas” — cozy, understated, and atmospheric rather than bold or grand.
📀 The Album Context — A Very She & Him Christmas
- The album is the duo’s first holiday-themed record.
- It features a selection of classic Christmas songs (covers) done in She & Him’s nostalgic/indie style.
- Their goal seems to have been to evoke a warm, vintage-era holiday mood — with minimal instrumentation, sparing arrangements, and an emphasis on vocal character and atmosphere rather than production glitz.
🧑🎤 About She & Him
- She & Him is a musical duo composed of vocalist / actress Zooey Deschanel and multi-instrumentalist/producer M. Ward.
- Their sound often draws on 1950s–60s pop, classic vocal styles, and indie-folk sensibilities — which makes them well-suited to reinterpreting holiday classics like “The Christmas Waltz.”
✅ Reception & What Makes Their Version Distinct
- Many listeners and reviewers praise the cover for being charming, cozy, and nostalgic — fitting the winter/holiday atmosphere without over-the-top production.
- At the same time, some reviews say the album overall (including this song) is “enjoyable if forgettable” — good background music for holidays (baking, wrapping gifts, relaxing) but not necessarily groundbreaking.
- The soft, stripped-down approach (guitar, piano, subtle vocal) gives the song a different emotional vibe than more orchestral or jazzy renditions — more intimate, more indie-folk than “big holiday production.”
