“Lava” is a short film created by Pixar Animation Studios in 2014. This computer-animated musical, directed and written by James Ford Murphy and produced by Andrea Warren, first premiered at the Hiroshima International Animation Festival on June 14, 2014. It was later released in theaters alongside another Pixar film, “Inside Out”, on June 19, 2015.
The story of “Lava” is a romantic tale that spans millions of years. The film is set to a song, also titled “Lava”, which was written by Murphy. The song and film were inspired by the “stunning beauty of tropical islands and the explosive majesty of ocean volcanoes.” Murphy was especially drawn to the Hawaiian islands, where he had honeymooned 25 years prior. In order to further connect with the land that inspired him, Murphy returned to Hawaii before beginning production on the film.
