Driving Home For Christmas Ukulele Chords by Chris Rea

“Driving Home for Christmas” is a cherished holiday song by British singer-songwriter Chris Rea. Released in 1988, the song was not an immediate hit but gradually gained popularity over the years, eventually becoming a staple of Christmas music in the UK and beyond. Chris Rea wrote the song, inspired by his own experience of driving from London to Middlesbrough in heavy traffic while trying to get home for Christmas.

The song is characterized by its smooth, melodic tune and Rea’s distinctive husky voice, combined with lyrics that beautifully capture the anticipation and warmth of heading home during the holiday season. The song’s gradual buildup in popularity is a testament to its relatability and the universal appeal of its theme. While “Driving Home for Christmas” did not win any major music awards, its enduring popularity, especially during the holiday season, is a significant achievement in itself.

An interesting aspect of “Driving Home for Christmas” is that it differs from traditional Christmas songs in terms of its style and mood. It’s more of a winter road song, evoking images of cold, festive landscapes and the coziness of home. This makes it a unique addition to the canon of Christmas music, appealing to those who enjoy a more contemporary and less conventional holiday song.

The song has been covered by various artists, but Chris Rea’s original version remains the most iconic, often associated with the start of the holiday season in the UK. Its charm lies in its simplicity and the emotional connection it creates, making “Driving Home for Christmas” a beloved song that resonates with anyone who has ever looked forward to being home for the holidays.
