“Dile Que” History:.
🎵 “Dile Que” — Enrique Iglesias
Enrique Iglesias recorded “Dile Que” for his 2010 album Euphoria. It appears as track 9 on the album. The song was written by Enrique Iglesias and Argentine singer-songwriter Coti Sorokin.
The title literally means “Tell Her” (or “Tell her that…”), and that’s essentially the entire emotional mechanism of the song: Enrique is speaking through an intermediary to the woman he has lost.
The opening idea is:
“Tell her that I can’t wait…”
and he keeps asking this third person to tell her that he still loves her and cannot forget her.
The interesting part: he’s not really singing to her
That’s what I find particularly effective about the song.
He’s saying, essentially:
“I can’t bring myself to tell her directly, so you tell her for me.”
And that creates a strange emotional distance. He’s physically separated from her, but psychologically he’s completely consumed by her absence.
The central phrase “Dile que la quiero” means:
“Tell her that I love her.”
But notice the progression in the song. He’s not saying, “I love her, and I’m fine.” He’s saying that without her, his life has lost its equilibrium, that he has lost his freedom, and that he cannot forget her.
So it’s really a song about absence more than simply love.
And there’s an interesting musical thing
If you’re listening to it as a guitarist, you’ll probably notice that the harmony is actually quite simple.
One guitar transcription puts it in B♭ major, using a capo at the 3rd fret and the shapes:
G – Am – G – Am
with F, C and D appearing as the harmony develops.
That’s a very accessible harmonic vocabulary, but Enrique’s melody gives it considerably more emotional weight than the chord progression itself would suggest.
And that’s actually something I think you’ll appreciate given how often we’ve talked about phrasing and the human being behind the sound.
The song isn’t trying to impress you with harmonic complexity.
It’s trying to make you feel the desperation of the melody.
One other thing I think you’ll like
The recording credits show Carlos Paucar on guitar, keyboards, bass, background vocals, production/engineering and arranging-related work, with Pablo De La Loza also contributing keyboards, guitar and bass.
And the official Enrique Iglesias YouTube upload identifies the recording as a Universal Music Group release from Euphoria.
